Sitecore 9 Data Flow - Part 3 - Process and Aggregate

In this post I will walk you through the processing and aggregation of the collected analytics data in sitecore, if you didn't check the previous two posts I really recommend you go through these before checking this one, here are the links for the previous posts:

The previous post explained how data is being collected and send when session end to the xConnect collection service which in turn save data into xDB,  another important information you need to know here that the a live aggregation Plug-In in the same role will react by doing two things:

  1. Save a record in the processing pool database in addition to,
  2. Send infromation to the processing role about how to handle the new data.

What is the xDB processing pool database?

The processing pool database mainly save wrok items IDs for the interactions and contacts that have been collected by the tracker and added by the xConnect collection database, In addition it is being used as a retry mechanism for historical aggregation, live aggregation and distributed processing.

Now, the xDB processing role will contact the processing pools database and pull the latest added aggregation tasks and execute these, pulling data from Collection role in addition to more data from reference data service if needed and when done the data will be saved to the Reporting database.

If you login to sitecore and check the launch pad you will see some applications that use these aggregated information, such experience analytics reports, experience profile and path analyzer.
